My Facebook page says my hometown is Flushing, Queens, and that’s true, but when I was still pretty young, my family moved to Hazlet in Monmouth County, New Jersey. It’s crap, just trust me. One good thing about Hazlet is that it’s nearby the Jersey shore. No Hamptons for me, I’m a Jersey shore guy. So with it being Memorial Day weekend and all, I drove down to the shore to enjoy the sun, even if the water was a frigid 52 degrees. On the way back, I had to make a detour to Red Bank for some pizza. I’m pretty opinionated about pizza, so this might come as a surprise, but the Sicilian-style at New Corner Pizza is pretty amazing. In fact, when it comes to regular (not-brick oven) pizza, I honestly can’t think of any pizza I’d rather eat, period. Yes, it’s that good. I think it has something to do with the tomato sauce, which is packed with onions, but still light and fresh. The crust is pretty amazing too, very high and airy, with just the right amount of crisp to it. The pizza needs to be fresh, but New Corner is really popular, so the turn-over is high. Still, if you head out to Red Bank to try it, make sure it doesn’t look like the pizza has been lying around for an hour. And if you know of better pizza than this, I’m listening.
