off-Soho Malaysian

I wish I was hip enough to be invited to high-fashion store openings more often. This photo turned out cool — some models walking down the stairs at the new Jill Sander store on Howard near Crosby Street. It’s very close to Nyonya, one of my all-time favorite restaurants, so the choice about where to eat for dinner afterwards was pretty easy.

I’ve eaten at Nyonya more times than I can count, but I’m still finding new dishes to try. That crazy-looking thing above is called Pasembur, described as “Shredded cucumber, jicama & bean sprouts w. tofu shrimp pancake, jelly fish. Sliced hard boiled eggs & Chef’s special sauce.” Phew, that’s a mouthful. There was definitely a vegetable salad hidden under there, but you’re looking at the pancake. It was fried and very crispy, with little bits of dried shrimp and chunks of tofu. The sauce was hard to describe, but I’d say it was a cross between some kind of sweet syrup and that carrot dressing Japanese places serve on salad. That might sound a little gross, but honestly, the whole thing was addictively tasty.
