I’m heading to London in a few days, so it’s about time that I wrap up my New Orleans blogging. It’s only been 4 months since I went. Whenever I’m at the IACP convention, I have to consult with writer Fred Thompson about where to eat. He’s always got the scoop on some place cool. And this year, he did not disappoint. When we broke for lunch one day, he told me that a friend of his knew about really good spot, but it was a bit of ride. So four or five us piled into a cab and drove out to the middle of nowhere (from my perspective at least).
After some arguing with the cabbie, we ended up at Parkway. I used to think I knew what a great po’ boy was, but clearly I was wrong. Parkway really has no equal. We ordered just about everything on the menu, by the way, including some great sweet potato fries, regular fries, and gumbo for dipping those fries. I opted for my favorite, an oyster po’ boy. Someone got the shrimp po’ boy, and someone else got the hot roast beef. I tried some of everything, and I’m kind of still in awe.
In addition to the great food, the service is super friendly, and it’s the kind of place where you want to hang out all day long. My only regret is that we had to head back to the conference. I told every one about Parkway, urging friends to make the trip. If you didn’t take my advice, then you really missed out. A lot of people I know spent all their time at mega $$$ restaurants, and that’s fine, but I felt better about spending my money in the mom-and-pop places. The 4-star joints didn’t need my out-of-towner money. As for who ate better, well, I think I did pretty darned well.
