Mac and cheese… yeah, that’s how I roll on Valentine’s Day. You won’t find me at a fancy restaurant in the city, especially not in this economy. I stayed home and cooked all day. I think that makes the holiday a lot more special for everyone. About the recipe, it’s by Sylvia Wood’s from her amazing book Sylvia’s Family Soul Food Cookbook. It’s now an oldie but a goodie. What can I say about Sylvia? She’s one of the sweetest people I’ve ever worked with, and she built her famous Harlem restaurant on family and love.
Yes, that’s right, I baked a red velvet cake too. Don’t tell me it’s cheese-y. You know you wish someone baked you one too. I feel like I’ve been reading and writing about red velvet a lot lately, but this one is seriously Southern, with chopped pecans in the cream cheese frosting. I nearly doubled the frosting, by the way, because I like it better that way. I think it was a hit.
