You Can Trust a Skinny Cook — a cookbook giveaway

chocolate cake

This drawing is now closed, sorry! Congrats to the winners. Chocolate cake in a healthy cookbook? Yes, please. I’ve been dying to write about You Can Trust a Skinny Cook again because I’ve been cooking out of it for the past year, ever since the manuscript was first delivered to me. In fact I love this book so much, I’m doing a little giveaway. Two winners will be chosen at random from anyone in the U.S. or Canada who posts a comment here — one entry per person please.

You Can Trust a Skinny Cook

The first time I wrote about this project, I couldn’t give away much information, but now the book is showing up in stores across the country. If authorΒ Allison Fishman looks familiar, you might remember her as one of the co-hosts of Lifetime’s Cook Yourself Thin show, which turned into a best-selling cookbook by the same name. If you don’t know her, you’ll be in for a treat if you check out this book — her smart tips, awesome-tasting recipes, and great sense of humor come through on every page so well, you almost forget these recipes are good for you.

Here are some of my own snapshots from behind the scenes at the photoshoot. As usual, you’ll have to see the real book for the gorgeous photos by Lucy Schaeffer, and you won’t be disappointed. In fact the stunning photo of lemon-blueberry tarts on her web site home page are from this book.

Simon Andrews, food stylist

Food styling credit goes to Simon Andrews — yes, I work with Simon a lot because he’s incredibly talented and a really nice guy. How cool is this shot? We wanted an overhead angle for the frittata, so we had to move the set to the floor to make it work.

The propping was done by Deborah Williams. I always have to post a few photos like these from photoshoots just to make Irvin Lin a little jealous.

soup

I need to make this soup recipe soon — love the color.

dessert

The desserts in this book are really amazing. Allison has a great philosophy that people aren’t likely to stick to a healthy diet if they’re deprived all the time. I’m totally with her on that.

Shhh, don’t tell Allison I posted this series of photos of her being silly on set. She’s just so cute and funny, I couldn’t resist.

  1. The color on that soup photo really is gorgeous β€” though I have to admit you had me with the photo of the chocolate cake up top. Yum! Looks like a super fun cookbook, mostly because it looks like it was a blast to style and shoot it. I love the delight on Allison’s face in those snaps.

  2. If I knew Allison personally, I would totally call her up and say “Hey Allison, can you come over and prepare me a meal?” and she’d say “No, but if you pick up the book, you’ll be able to prepare a variety of healthy, flavorful meals for yourself” and I’d say “Cool”! Or maybe I would say “Thanks”! I don’t know…something like that.

Anyway, I’m totally getting this book…unless I win one for posting this comment. BUT…even if I win one, I’ll STILL buy copies for family and friends.

  3. Love seeing the behind the scenes shots of the photoshoot — it’s quite an art and science to get that right. Makes Allison’s creations look that much better!

  4. Alison was so sweet! It was so nice of her to stop by to say thanks that day she was here. Such a pretty and sunshiney person. πŸ™‚

(Don’t enter me in the contest of course!)

  5. Chocolate cake and healthy, words I love in the same sentence! All the pictures are whetting my appetite. Would love to try these out for my husband and I since we are constantly resolving to eat better but never satiated by the so called “healthy food”. And my toddler will go nuts for the blueberry biscuit/shortcake!

  6. I’d love to win one of these cookbooks because:

    1) I want to learn to cook, since at the moment I sort of can’t
    2) I want to be skinny when I am cooking
    3) I want to look like Allison.

I’ll settle for (1) and (2) because someone already looks like Allison.

    Thanks!

  7. This book is perfect to get ready for the summer season…or basically any season at this point of my life. This is the year my metabolism met my thirties and started to s-l-o-w d-o-w-n. It’s great to see that healthy eating can still be delicious. πŸ™‚
Thank you for the behind the scenes pics and for the contest!

  8. Wow, this book looks really amazing and I think it’d be perfect for my mom, who loves to cook and is also trying to eat healthier πŸ™‚

  9. The photos look great! I would love to have this book so that I can try the recipes for my family. Thanks for the behind-the-scenes view and the recommendation.

  10. This looks awesome! Its so neat to see the Behind the scenes shoot of what actually happens during a cookbook shoot. Can’t wait to try the recipes!

  11. I’m always looking for delicious, flavorful recipes that aren’t all butter, cream and salt. These look incredible.

  12. sign me up! I love healthy, non-depriving cookbooks. Plus, you probably aren’t willing to send me that cake which means I should win the book so I can bake it for myself. I mean, for my family. πŸ˜‰

(in my dreams, I line up all the chocolate cake recipes I enjoy, bake them all and do a side-by-side taste test… wouldn’t that make for a lovely day?)

  13. I have been waiting for the perfect addition to my healthy cookbook library that started with Ellie Krieger. Can’t wait to try your recipes!

  14. I would love to win, please please please!!! I need to cook healthier so I can get on the right track, plus the pictures and the food look fabulous!

  15. I love your behind the scene photos! I do the same thing (shoot on the floor) because my kitchen is a dark, galley-style one so I always try to move everything to the living room floor covered with a tablecloth or a tea towel. And yes, I’d love the book too πŸ™‚

  16. Well hello, how are you? I wanted to stop over and say hi, and thank you for commenting. I look forward to getting to know you through your site, and I thought I was a prop collector.. what an eclectic collection.
