behing the scenes for the new Jean Anderson cookbook

November 16, 2012

Recently I heard some food experts on a panel discussing what exactly is American food — how do you define it? The question makes for an enjoyable debate, but for me the answer is simple. Southern food is American food, and even though I didn’t grow up eating this way, I do a lot of … More behing the scenes for the new Jean Anderson cookbook

Butch Bakery Cookbook — behind-the-scenes at the shoot

October 28, 2011

Note: This drawing is now closed. It’s time again for another behind-the-scenes post, this time for the brand-new The Butch Bakery Cookbook. David Arrick and Janice Kollar are the geniuses behind these concoctions, spiked with booze, punched up with chili powder, and topped with bacon.

Falling off the Bone and a giveaway

October 28, 2010

Note: This drawing is now closed.  One of the things I love about Fall are the new cookbooks.  On this same day in 2009 I was on a photoshoot for the next cookbook by the acclaimed Jean Anderson.  That’s not too intimidating.  It’s not like she’s a legend or anything…  Truth be told, at the … More Falling off the Bone and a giveaway

slow-cooked meat — behind the scenes

October 29, 2009

Ribs… how’s that for a photo to grab your attention! I’m on set this week shooting the next book by acclaimed food writer Jean Anderson. The title will have to remain a secret for now, but the book is all about slow-cooking meats until they’re literally falling-off-the-bone tender.

more re: Japanese curry

November 7, 2008

I’d love to leave the brownie pic at the top of my blog forever, but I’ve been a blog slacker lately, and I really need to catch up. For example, I made the hot version of that Japanese curry the other day. (Thanks again to Mika and Jason, particularly for writing “hot” on the package … More more re: Japanese curry

about me

I'm Justin Schwartz, an Executive Editor for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. My opinions are my own and have nothing to do with my employer. I'm an occasional food writer and wannabe photographer, and this blog is about what I'm up to these days. I'm the author of Veg Out Vegetarian Guide to New York City and The Marshmallow Fluff Cookbook. You can email me at justin at justinschwartz.com, but if your question is about how to get your book published, please read my FAQ. I'm also on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook (fan page).

A lot of the books I write about are ones I've edited, so my opinions are very biased. And if I didn't publish the book, someone probably gave it to me for free, so keep that in mind before you take my word for it. Sometimes I just like to give a shout-out to my friends.

I used up the leftover pork to make lettuce wraps. So delicious. #glutenfree #grainfree #whole30
I also got a lesson in making #Filipino style shredded #pork #adobo from chef @alvincailan and put it to very good use. I adapted it a bit to be #glutenfree and #grainfree and served it over #cauliflowerrice — it was insanely good. Now I have to use up the rest of the slow cooked pork.
Thanks to @alvincailan for the unintentional lesson on #slowcooking #porkshoulder this week. Ten hours and this baby is beyond tender. Now what should I do with it?
